Keep Michener Centre Open

In 2008 the Alberta government asked developmentally disabled residents, their families and guardians, if they wanted to stay in Michener Centre. Ninety per cent decided to stay. For them, Michener is home. The government promised that they would not close Michener. Now, Premier Alison Redford has broken that promise and ordered their eviction, with the support of local MLAs Mary Anne Jablonski and Cal Dallas.

Dear Premier Redford,
I am writing to ask you to honour the Alberta government’s promise not to evict some of Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens from their home in Red Deer’s Michener Centre.
In 2008 the government promised the residents and their families that these severely disabled, medically fragile Albertans could continue to live there. For many in their fifties, it’s the only home they’ve had their entire adult lives.
For decades, Michener Centre has provided a safe, stable place with caring staff who are equipped and trained to deal with their clients’ unique needs. Many residents have been cared for by the same workers for years. These workers consider their clients to be part of their own families.
This decision will rob the residents of everything familiar — the place they live and the caregivers they love. Evicting them puts their emotional and physical wellbeing at serious risk.
Please don’t close Michener Centre. Instead, honour the promise your government made to these people. Let them remain in their home.
